"Delving into Cataracts: Recognizing Cataract Awareness Month this June!"

 Introduction:

How Do Cataracts Develop?

In a healthy eye, the lenses are filled with proteins arranged to maintain transparency flawlessly. However, with time, these proteins may aggregate, leading to opacity and the formation of cataracts. Despite the rest of the eye remaining healthy, cataracts can hinder the passage of light to the retina.

What Are the Signs of Cataracts?

Cataracts can initially present subtly, making it difficult to detect their progression. Over time, you may notice the following symptoms:

  • Colors appearing faded or yellowed

  • Decreased night vision

  • Heightened sensitivity to light and glare

  • Halo effect surrounding lights

  • Vision becoming dim, cloudy, or blurry

  • More frequent changes in prescription for glasses

  • Double vision in one eye

Risk Factors for Cataracts

While aging is the primary risk factor for cataracts, several other factors can accelerate their development. These include diabetes, smoking, a family history of cataracts, prolonged UV radiation exposure, high blood pressure, past eye inflammation or injury, prior eye surgeries, obesity, excessive alcohol consumption, and prolonged use of corticosteroid medication.

The Positive Outlook: Treatments for Cataracts

In the early stages, cataract symptoms may be managed with stronger glasses prescriptions. However, as the condition progresses, glasses or contacts may become inadequate. Thankfully, cataract surgery offers a common and highly effective solution. This routine procedure, performed separately on each eye, carries low risks and can address not only cataracts but also other vision issues like astigmatism.
